Besponsa (0.9 mg) is a therapeutic drug primarily used to treat certain types of acute leukemia. It contains the active ingredient inotuzumab ozogamicin. This medication works by directly targeting leukemia cells and delivering a toxic agent to them, which helps destroy cancer cells and reduce their spread.
Indications:
- Treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in adults or children who have not responded to conventional therapies or whose disease has relapsed after treatment.
- Often used as part of the preparative regimen before bone marrow (stem cell) transplantation.
- In some cases, it may be used within combination treatment protocols with other drugs to treat treatment-resistant lymphoid malignancies.
Warnings and precautions:
- Liver and hepatic steatosis: Besponsa may cause liver problems, including hepatic veno-occlusive disease (veno-occlusive liver injury), cirrhosis, or liver failure. Liver function tests should be performed regularly before and during treatment.
- Infection: The drug increases the risk of infection, so signs of infection should be monitored and reported promptly.
- Blood disorders: The medication can cause decreases in white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets, which may increase the risk of bleeding, anemia, or infection.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Besponsa is not safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding; contraception options should be discussed before starting treatment.
- Allergic reactions: Hypersensitivity reactions can occur during or after infusion, such as rash, itching, difficulty breathing, or facial swelling. Contact a physician immediately if any of these symptoms occur.
- Close medical monitoring: Besponsa requires continuous medical follow-up during treatment, including periodic blood tests and liver and kidney function tests.
Important notes:
- Besponsa is administered by intravenous infusion only and must be given under specialized medical supervision.
- It is used only by prescription and under the direction of an oncologist or hematologist.
- Follow all physician instructions and do not alter the dose or infusion schedule without medical consultation.
