Zavicefta is an antibiotic medication containing two active ingredients: Ceftazidime and Avibactam. Ceftazidime belongs to the cephalosporin class of antibiotics and works by killing bacteria, while Avibactam inhibits certain bacterial enzymes responsible for antibiotic resistance.
It is used to treat severe and complicated bacterial infections, particularly those caused by certain multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria.
Indications
-
Treatment of complicated intra-abdominal infections, including certain infections affecting organs and tissues within the abdominal cavity.
-
Treatment of complicated urinary tract infections, including pyelonephritis.
-
Treatment of hospital-acquired pneumonia.
-
Treatment of ventilator-associated pneumonia.
-
Treatment of bloodstream infections associated with certain infections listed above in adults.
-
Treatment of certain infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria when treatment options are limited.
Dosage and Administration
-
Usual adult dose for patients with normal kidney function: 2 g of Ceftazidime combined with 0.5 g of Avibactam every 8 hours.
-
Administered by intravenous infusion over 2 hours under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
-
Treatment duration generally ranges from 5 to 14 days, depending on the type and severity of the infection and the patient’s response to treatment.
-
Dose adjustments may be necessary for patients with impaired kidney function.
-
Pediatric doses are determined according to age, body weight, and kidney function.
-
May be used in combination with Metronidazole to treat complicated intra-abdominal infections when coverage against anaerobic bacteria is required.
-
Each vial contains 2 g of Ceftazidime and 0.5 g of Avibactam, providing a total of 2.5 g of active ingredients.
Warnings and Precautions
-
Contraindicated in patients with severe hypersensitivity to cephalosporins or any component of the medication.
-
Inform your physician if you have a history of severe allergic reactions to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
-
Kidney function should be monitored, and dosage adjustments are required in patients with renal impairment.
-
May cause severe diarrhea associated with Clostridioides difficile infection.
-
Seizures or neurological disturbances may occur, particularly in patients with kidney impairment if the dosage is not appropriately adjusted.
-
Consult a physician before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
-
Unnecessary or inappropriate use may contribute to increased bacterial resistance to antibiotics.
-
Patients should be monitored during treatment for allergic reactions or serious adverse effects.
Possible Side Effects
-
Nausea and vomiting.
-
Diarrhea.
-
Abdominal pain and gastrointestinal disturbances.
-
Headache.
-
Dizziness.
-
Skin rash and itching.
-
Elevated liver enzymes.
-
Local reactions at the intravenous infusion site.
-
Changes in certain blood test results.
-
Fungal infections due to disruption of the body’s normal microbial balance.
-
Severe allergic reactions in rare cases.
-
Seizures or neurological disturbances, particularly in patients with impaired kidney function.
Note: Zavicefta is a prescription antibiotic that must be administered under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional, especially in cases of severe or antibiotic-resistant infections. The dosage and duration of treatment should be determined based on the type of infection, bacterial culture results, and kidney function. It should not be used without medical guidance.
